Yuria Okamura’s practice encompasses drawing, painting and installation. She brings together and reinterprets diverse metaphysical imaginings from across cultures and histories through the utopian language of geometry and diagrammatic aesthetics.
In her intricate beautiful drawings, she maps and reconfigures geometric forms that reference patterns in nature, esoteric symbolism, alchemical diagrams, religious architecture and decoration, and spiritualist abstract painting. In doing so, Yuria examines the symbolic implication of harmonic ideals embedded in geometry, and how such ideas might open up to reinterpretations within the new interrelated compositions.
For nearly a decade, Yuria has exhibited regularly in Australia, as well as internationally. She has received a number of awards, scholarships and residencies including the Sanskriti Kendra Residency (India) and The Studios at MASS MoCA (USA). Her work is held in private and public collections, including the Justin Art House Musuem (JAHM) Collection.
