Douglas Schofield's artistic practice is focused on gardens, which he considers intriguing sites of human interaction with nature. The shapes, textures, movements and forms of the garden are embedded and reflected in his abstract paintings.
Immersed in nature and gardening from a young age, Douglas has interwoven his intimate knowledge of gardening practices into his art making. He explores the tension between the wildness of nature and the curated cultivated elements of the garden in his dynamic paintings and prints. This dialogue between the garden and studio informs painterly and gestural work that celebrates materiality, mark making and vivid colour.
Douglas has been included in numerous exhibitions, including overseas in China, Spain and the Phillipines. He graduated Fine Art (Hons) at UNSW Art & Design in 2017 and his work has been selected for a number of awards, including the Fisher’s Ghost Art Award in 2019. His work is held in the Macquarie Group Collection and private collections, nationally and internationally.
