Postcards from Athens
Inspired by recent travels to Greece, Jacqueline Larcombe presents a new series of bold energetic monotypes. In her solo exhibition, Postcards from Athens, she explores the printmaking form, creating unique artworks that hum with the pulse of an ancient world colliding with a busy metropolis.
Connecting with her Greek heritage, the artist continues her interest in classical reference points and so spent time wandering the city of Athens, engaging with its neighbourhoods, museums and archaeology. She noted how antiquity sat alongside the contemporary and that the city seemed to be under perpetual construction, with urban materials, such as glass, plastics and metal now coming to the fore.
The polykatoikia is the dominant residential form and stands as a symbol of the city’s post-war urban boom. It is the unlikely visually unifying cement block of Athens, with each building adorned with its own residential flair (awnings, security bars, textured glass and walls, balconies and plants.
The vibrant forms, colours, patterns and shapes of this place are captured in Jacqueline’s wonder filled prints. The process of monoprinting involves painting directly onto a mesh screen and is time sensitive, so the work must be completed before the paint begins to dry. This method has allowed artist to work in an intuitive and immediate way as evidenced in this exhibition of dynamic and beautiful artworks.
