Sophie La Maitre

Sophie La Maitre’s practice is focused on a deep appreciation for the seemingly ordinary, unnoticed fleeting moments of our daily lives and the quietude found within this. Her abstract paintings reflect an intense engagement with her surroundings and echo the impressions from her residence near the coast.
She records passing colours and compositions that are then stored in her archive of source material. These remnants, captured through small photographs and delicate drawings, become the raw material for her paintings. Layers of thinly and carefully applied acrylic paint soak and seep across the surface of her canvases, creating harmonious abstract paintings that flow in colour and form.
Since graduating in 2017 from Edith Cowan University with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours), she has exhibited regularly, undertaken a number of residencies and had her work acquired by private collections across Australia.
