Douglas Schofield 'Interlace'

In this solo exhibition of new works, Interlace, Douglas Schofield reveals his vibrant and distinctive approach to painting. Inspired by the shapes, colours and forms found in nature and gardens, his abstract paintings radiate boldness and movement.

The intimate knowledge of gardening, plants and the landscape he has experienced as a gardener is intricately linked to his art practice. Douglas often depicts garden detritus, weather impacts and the smaller details, such as the weaving of plants, fallen leaves and light through meshed foliage. He observes the visual play between vertical growth and horizons, both natural and constructed, which have resulted in a recuring pattern of mingling vertical and horizontal marks – a kind of loose shimmering grid visible throughout the series.

As humans, we are attuned to the beauty of the natural world, Douglas takes this sensibility and uses it to inform his energetic and vividly coloured paintings. The interlacing of plants, gardening and nature in our lives is truly felt in this body of work.
