Jacqueline Larcombe 'Postcards from Athens'

Inspired by recent travels to Greece, Jacqueline Larcombe presents a new series of bold and energetic monotype prints in her solo exhibition, Postcards from Athens. Exploring the printmaking form, Jacqueline has created unique one-off prints that hum with the pulse of an ancient world colliding with a busy metropolis.

Connecting with her Greek heritage, the artist followed her interest in classical reference points and spent time wandering the city of Athens, engaging with its neighbourhoods, museums and archaeology, noting how the ancient world sits alongside the contemporary. The town seemed to be under perpetual construction, with urban materials, such as glass, plastics and metal now coming to the fore.

The polykatoikia is the dominant residential form and stands as a symbol of the city’s post-war urban boom. It is the unlikely visually unifying cement block of Athens, with each building adorned with its own residential flair (awnings, security bars, textured glass and walls, balconies and plants).

Vibrant forms, colours, patterns and shapes fill this series of artworks, capturing the intensity of the city. The process of monoprinting involves painting directly onto a mesh screen and is time sensitive, so the artwork is completed before the paint begins to dry. This method allowed the artist to work in an intuitive and immediate way as evidenced in these dynamic and beautiful artworks.
