Kevin Diallo at Casula Powerhouse
Kevin Diallo’s work is featured in Jamming with Strangers, a new exhibition at the Casula Powerhouse in Sydney, which considers how communities connect through music. It features new artwork commissions and events from a range of established and emerging artists.
In his new series, Ode to Zouglou, which was commissioned especially for the exhibition, Kevin created prints and a video work. Each print shows a pixelated, blurry and enlarged Youtube screenshot of a Zouglou dance video clip that has been juxtaposed with hand painted mud cloth inspired design. Zouglou is a popular dance-oriented style of music that originated from the Ivory Coast in the 1990s. The songs often recount various social realities experienced by the Ivorian youth and carries messages, sometimes humorous, sometimes political, or, more often, delivers advice on life.
The exhibition is on at the Casula Powerhouse in Sydney until 27 February 2022.
